Smoke Alarm Laws

Starting 1/1/2015, the State Fire Marshal will required all smoke alarms to:
  • Display the date of manufacture
  • Provide a place where the date of installation can be written; and
  • Incorporate a hush feature
Existing smoke alarms (approved when installed) don’t need to be replaced immediately.

For more information, please view California State Fire Marshal Information Bulletin 13-006

Carbon Monoxide Detector Requirements

Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, but highly toxic to humans. The Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act of 2010 requires all single-family homes with an attached garage or a fossil fuel source (a HVAC unit, fireplace, gas stove, etc.) to install carbon monoxide detectors within. Owners of multi-family leased or rental quarters, such as apartment buildings, rented single-family homes and duplexes are also required to install CO detectors.

For more information, please view California Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act of 2010
